ROGERS — James Melvin Chambers, 83, of Rogers died June 9, 2007, at his home. He was born Aug. 5, 1923, near Bennington, Okla., to Ervin and Addie Biles Chambers.

He moved to Rogers from Durant, Okla, in 1983, and retired from Southwestern Bell in Oklahoma after 30 years. He served as president of the Communications Workers of America. He was a Baptist and a member of Grace Baptist Church in Rogers. He was a deacon at Lakeside Baptist Church in Rogers for 13 years. He enjoyed horse riding and fishing.

He was a veteran of World War II, where he served as a staff sergeant in the Army Air Corps. He was a flight engineer and a top turret gunner on a B-17, and flew on 32 successful missions. He received the Air Medal with four oak leaf clusters and the Distinguished Flying Cross.

Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Wilma Bruce Chambers, of the home; one son, James M. Chambers Jr. and wife Lindy Sexton Chambers of Rogers; one stepgrandson, Jim Goza of Rogers.

Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday in the Rogers Cemetery with James Longmate officiating. Military honors will be by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3031 of Rogers.

No visitation is planned.
