DUNHAM, D.H. - Chanute, Kan., Sept. 9.- D.H. Dunham of Parsons was killed shortly after two o'clock this afternoon when the locomotive of the southbound Missouri, Kansas & Texas passenger train, which he was driving, stopped on the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railroad crossing southeast of the city, squarely in front of an approaching freight train. Failure of the air brakes to work properly was the probable cause of Engineer Dunham's inability to stop his engine before reaching the crossing. ***** A telegram was received here Saturday afternoon telling of the accidental death of Mr. Dunham. His wife and daughters have lived in Rogers for many years but he had only visited here during short vacations. One of his daughters, Miss Garnett, is a teacher in the Rogers public school and the youngest daughter, Miss Edith, has been clerking at Stroud's for several years. Miss Daisy has been at home with her mother who is very poorly this summer and it is feared the shock of Mr. Dunham's death may go hard with her. Mr. Dunham was 74 years old and the oldest engineer in the service of the M.K. & T., with which he had been connected for over forty years. The company had offered to retire him on a pension but he had refused to accept retirement so long as he was able to pass the required physical examinations and was still considered one of the safest men in the passenger service. The death of Mr. Dunham was a great grief to his many friends on the entire system for they had hoped for him a long and peaceful old age with his family in Rogers, who last year built a pretty new home in the Blackburn Addition. It is not often that a man is given the strength and will power to remain so long at his post of duty in the railroad service. The funeral was delayed awaiting the arrival of the oldest daughter, Mrs. Ada Travis, from San Francisco. She arrived yesterday noon and the funeral was held at the home on the East side this morning at ten o'clock.
