SPRINGDALE — Dr. Jim R. Metheny passed away March 11, 2011. Jimmy Ray Metheny was born Jan. 28, 1948 in Memphis, Tenn., to Willard Weldon and Ruth Childress Metheny.

Jim completed undergraduate studies at Arkansas State University and received his Doctor of Optometry degree from Southern College of Optometry. He married LeAnn Whitlock on April 4, 1985. They moved to Springdale in 1986 where Jim founded Metheny Eye Clinic.

He continued to serve the public until the time of his death. Jim had recently been appointed to the Peer Review Board of Ophthalmology. He was a member of Mensa and an avid bass fisherman. His first book had just been published, "Motley Tales of the Bizarre and Fantastic" under the pen name of J R Metheny.

Jim was preceded in death by his father, Willard Weldon Metheny.

Jim is survived by his wife, LeAnn Metheny; his mother, Ruth Metheny of Springdale; two daughters, Whitney Metheny of Springdale, and Amber Metheny McNutt and husband, Bob, of Corsicana, Texas; his sister, Betty Taylor and husband, Robert, of Huntsville, Ala.; a brother, Edward Metheny; three grandchildren, Alyssa Stills, Nicole Stills, and Matthew Stills, all of Corsicana, Texas; and a forthcoming grandchild due in September.

Visitation will be Sunday, March 13, 2011, 5-7 p.m. at Westfield Chapel in Springdale. The Funeral Service will be Monday, March 14, 2011, 4 p.m. at Westfield Chapel. Pallbearers will be John Crider, Mark Olsen, Gary Sewell, Mike Shivley, Brent Stierwalt and Kevin Young. The family suggests memorials may be made to the American Heart Association at www.heart.org.
