Freak Accident Leads to Death of Conway Boy
CONWAY -
Water from heavy rains caused heartbreak in a Conway community when 12-year-old Drake Walker disappeared while heading home during a thunderstorm Saturday.

From what police tell us this is a bizarre scenario because rushing water near Centennial Valley Country Club swept Walker into a nearby culvert, where he later drowned.

It was a sunny and playful time in the Centennial Valley Community on Labor Day, but when a thunderstorm hit the area over the weekend, tragedy struck with it.

"They actually found the body of that 12-year-old in the pond," said LaTresha Woodruff with Conway Police Department.

The incident hits home to Woodruff who also lives in the neighborhood.

"It's a very, very tragic situation here. The people in this community are close and they've rallied around the family, and they've been there for them since this happened," said Woodruff.

Fellow neighbor Phil Strassle told me he sees kids fishing and playing safely around the course all the time.

"I've never seen those kids to anything inappropriate, they're out there fishing and being good stewards of the property," Strassle said. "I've never seen anything astray."

Many of the culverts in the area are large enough to come waist high or more on an average person.

"Unfortunately they are big enough for someone to be washed in there and that's what happened with this 12-year-old," Woodruff added.

"I would think in a flash flooding scenario that type of flowing movement of water on a golf course I mean you don't expect that to happen," Strassle said.

According to Walker's family his funeral is set for Wednesday at 10 am in the New Life Church of Conway.

Visitation is set for the same place on Tuesday from 6 to 8 pm.
