Obituary

Jean Chesbro Stanford passed away on March 12, 2013. Jean Stanford was born in Heber Springs, Arkansas, February 15, 1917 to Jay and Josephine Chesbro. She was one of nine children, seven girls and two boys. She graduated from high school with honors. In 1938 she completed Nursing training at St. Vincent's School of Nursing in Little Rock, Arkansas, graduating with honors. There she met her husband, James Stanford, while she was attending his nephew as a patient. Jean and Jim were married on June 25, 1939.

She is survived by James M. Stanford, her husband, and a sister, Mrs. Wanda Sue Chesbro Sandage, and 10 nieces and nephews. Two of the nephews are lifelong Heber Springs residents, Dr. George Lay and Councilman James (Jim) Lay. She also leaves many grand nieces and nephews. Jean was instrumental in helping establish the Meals-on-Wheels program at the Waychoff Senior Center in Heber Springs and worked with that program for about 15 years until she became blind and could no longer serve her community. She was a longtime member of the First United Methodist Church.

A joint visitation for Jim and Jean Stanford will be held Saturday, March 8, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. in the Heber Springs First United Methodist Church with memorial services beginning at 2:00 p.m. The family will have a private interment at the Heber Springs Cemetery

Obituary

James Madison Stanford, age 98, of Heber Springs, Arkansas, passed away January 17, 2014, at the Southridge Village Retirement Center. Born June 15, 1915, in Blue Mountain, Mississippi, he was the son of the late George Stanford and Lou Ella Griffin Stanford.

Mr. Stanford married Jean Marie Chesbro on June 26, 1939. He was a pilot for American Airlines for thirty-one years and was also an instructor for military pilots during World War II. Mr. Stanford was a member and past president of the Grey Eagles Club. After his retirement, Jim and his wife moved to Heber Springs, where he was a resident for 54 years. He was a member of the Rotary Club of Heber Springs and played the bass fiddle in the local band, The Retreads. Mr. Stanford's wife, Jean, passed way on March 12, 2013. He then moved to Southridge Village Assisted Living.

In addition to his wife and parents, Mr. Stanford was preceded in death by three siblings.
