FAYETTEVILLE - Dr. John Kirkpatrick Skeeles Sr., 53, of Fayetteville died March 21, 1999, in Beijing, China, while on a trip for the University of Arkansas. He was born June 27, 1945, in Alexandria, La., to Jack C. and Ella Maude Kirkpatrick Skeeles.

He received a bachelor's degree from Louisiana Tech University, a doctor of veterinary medicine degree from Oklahoma State University and a master's and doctorate degree in medical microbiology from the University of Georgia.

He came to the University of Arkansas in 1978 and was appointed full professor in 1988. He worked in the area of poultry health and diseases.

He held a Diplomate status in the American College of Veterinary Microbiologist and was secretary-treasurer of the American College of Poultry Veterinarians. He was a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association and the American Association of Avian Pathologists.

He taught undergraduate and graduate courses in poultry health and veterinary science.

He was an Army veteran and a lieutenant colonel in the Army Reserve with the 431st Civil Affairs Battalion. He served in Desert Storm in 1992 and in Bosnia in 1996 and 1997.

He was a member of the Church of Christ, Latter-day Saints, Fayetteville Ward. He had served as elders quorum president, counselor in the Bishopric, Bishop Scoutmaster, counselor in the Stake Young Mens Presidency and was currently serving as a High Counselor in the Rogers Stake.

He was preceded in death by one daughter and his mother.

Survivors include his wife, Carol Lynn Van Wyngarden Skeeles, to whom he was married May 29, 1967; two daughters and sons-in-law, Betsy Hughes and James of Spokane, Wash., and Carey Baldwin and Scott of Provo, Utah; one son, John Kirkpatrick Skeeles Jr., serving a Latter-day Saints mission in Santiago, Chile; four grandchildren; his father of Alexandria; one brother, Bill Skeeles of New Orleans, La.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Church of Jesus Christ, Latter-day Saints in Fayetteville with David A. Bednar and Bishop Billy Ammons officiating.

Burial with military honors will be a Fairview Memorial Gardens in Fayetteville.

Arrangements are by Nelson's Funeral Home in Fayetteville.

Memorials may be made to a memorial scholarship in poultry science to the Agricultural Development Council in his name, c/o Agricultural Development Council, P.O. Box 2219, Fayetteville, 72702-2219.
