Paul Edward Blackard, 85, of Fayetteville, was born June 15, 1921, in Huntington to Delbert E. and Hazel Dell Fox Blackard.

Following graduation from high school, Paul went with the Civilian Conservation Corps to do road construction at the Eagleton Camp where he soon became company clerk. After that, he worked for Davis Lumber Co. until he began his company career in 1941 with Southwestern Gas and Electric Co. (now AEP). In 1942, Paul joined the U.S. Navy and served his country during World War II aboard a minesweep escort in the South Pacific. He returned to work for SWG&E and in 1947, married Bettye Lou Chronister. The family relocated to Fayetteville in 1957 and made it their home. He and Bettye raised five children together. Paul retired from SWEPCO in 1983.

Paul was a member of First Baptist Church in Fayetteville and was active in several areas of church business and outreach. He represented the church as a liaison to the Butterfield Trail Village Project. Paul was always looking for ways to be of service to those in need and gave of himself and his resources freely.

Having led a full and useful life, Paul crossed over into paradise on July 17, 2006. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Bettye, his parents and daughter-in-law Joan Blacked.

Paul is survived by his five children, Randy Blackard of Houston, Paula Blackard and life partner Kathy Chadima of Fayetteville, Gretchen and Allen Magers of Rogers, Louis and Peggy Blackard of West Fork and Marilyn and Mike Peacock of Rogers; five grandchildren, Tony Cress, Stacy Blackard, Christopher Peacock, Maddison Blackard and Sara Blackard; two brothers, Jerry Blackard of Mortrose, Colo., Delbert Blackard of Desert Palm Springs, Calif.; and a sister, Vivian Witcher of Fort Smith.

Visitation will be from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. today at Moore's Chapel in Fayetteville.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Moore's.

Interment will be in Fairview Memorial Gardens with Dr. Andrew M. Hall officiating.
