Bettye Lou Chronister Blackard, 80, of Fayetteville was born April 30, 1925, in Hartford to William McClellan "Mac" and Johnnie Violet Cantrell Chronister.

Following graduation from Mansfield High School, Bettye served her country in World War II as a fingerprint specialist with the FBI in Washington, D.C. She returned home and married Paul Edward Blachard in 1947. The family relocated to Fayetteville in 1957 and made it their home. A wife and homemaker, she and Paul raised five children.

Bettye was a member of First Baptist Church in Fayetteville and was active in the adult choir and the Women's Missionary Union. She also taught children's Sunday school and vacation Bible school classes and performed with the handbell choir. She was a prayer warrior.

A tireless worker and comforter of the bereaved, Bettye was laved and admired by all whose lives she touched. She never met a stranger and had a beaming smile and encouraging word for everyone. She put family first and was very involved in her children's lives, embracing their friends as her own.

Having led a full and useful life, Bettye crossed over into Paradise on Oct. 20, 2005. She is preceded in death by her parents, a brother, Billy Adam "B.A." Chronister and beloved daughter-in-law, Joan Leslie Blackard.

She is survived by her husband, Paul Edward Blackard; five children, Randy Blackard of Grove, Okla., Paula Blackard and her life partner Kathy Chadima of Fayetteville, Gretchen and Allen Magers of Rogers, Louis and Peggy Blackard of West Fork and Marilyn and Mike Peacock of Rogers; five grandchildren, Tony Cress, Stacy Blackard, Christopher Peacock, Maddison Blackard and Sara Blackard; a sister, Wilma Fox Conaway of Greenwood; a brother, Jimmy Dale Chronister of Euless, Texas.

Visitation will be from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Moore's Chapel in Fayetteville.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Moore's.

Interment will be in Fairview Memorial Gardens with Dr. Andrew M. Hall officiating.

Memorials may be made to Alzheimer's Disease Research, 22512 Gateway Center Drive, P.O. Box 1950, Clarksburg, Md. 20871-1950.
