GELABERT, Ed - Ed Gelabert, son of J.E. Gelabert of this city, was killed Monday night in a Rock Island wreck at Waldron, Kansas, a short distance northwest of Kansas City. Ed was fireman on a passenger train and was instantly killed as was also his engineer, McQueen, and a baggageman named C.H. Hart. A number of passengers were badly injured but not fatally. A freight train was standing on a switch at Waldron and the switch was open. The passenger train ran into the open switch while going at a high rate of speed and struck the freight engine head on. The freight crew jumped but the passenger men had no warning of the danger and were caught in the mass of debris. The engines interlocked and were a pile of scrap. The baggage and express cars were ditched but the coaches remained on the track. A strange coincidence of the affair is that Gelabert was running as a substitute. Just a week previous Gelabert was taken ill and the man who acted as his substitute was killed in a wreck. A telegram announcing the death was received by the family here yesterday morning and Garry Gelabert left last night for Trenton, Mo. where his brother had been living and where we understand he will be buried. The deceased was 28 years old. He lived in Rogers a number of years although for several years past he has been on the railroad and was here only at intervals. While here he was a well known member of the local ball team and was associated with his father and brothers in the brick making business. He was married here six or seven years ago to Miss Alta Williams, who was living with her grandmother, a Mrs. Jones. We understand they have no children. The death of Mr. Gelabert was sad news to his many Rogers friends for he was a popular young man. Rogers has many boys among the railroad men of the Southwest but this is the first death by accident among them for a long time. The bereaved wife and parents have the sympathy of the community.
