CHERRY VALLEY -- Melvin Eugene Kendell, 83, of Cherry Valley died Tuesday, Feb. 22, at St. Bernard's Medical Center of Jonesboro. Born at Cherry Valley, he attended school at Cherry Valley and was a member of Cherry Valley Baptist Church. He was a World War II Army veteran and a former member of the American Legion post at Cherry Valley. For many years he worked as a nurse's assistant at the VA hospital at Memphis until his retirement in 1975. Survivors include two daughters, Paula Godwin of Bartlett, Tenn., and Betty Hobbs of Lakeland, Tenn.; one sister, Charlene Sanders of Cherry Valley; two brothers, James Kendell of Bruceton, Tenn., and Oscar Kendell of Cherry Valley; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Verna Kendell; and his parents, Oscar Edison Kendell and Elsie Blanche McClung Kendell. Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the Thompson-Wilson Funeral Home chapel at Wynne, with George Fink officiating. Burial will be in Bowers Cemetery at Cherry Valley. Pallbearers will be Michael Godwin II, Christopher Todd Godwin, Neil Fredrick and Michael Dustin Godwin. Jonesboro Sun 24 Feb 2005
