Local vet, known for drug research, treating horses, dies at age 65

A local veterinarian known for his drug research and skill in treating horses has died at age 65.

Dr. Doyne Hamm of Fayetteville died Sunday in a Fayetteville hospital.

Hamm was known nationwide and abroad for his equine pharmaceutical research and was widely in demand as a veterinary practitioner in the treatment of horses. He conducted the clinical research that led to the development, approval and marketing of such products as Banamine, DMSO, Adequan, Sodium Hyaluronate, Domosedan and Ketopfren, authored numerous research articles in veterinary journals and was the recipient of numerous awards and fellowships in his field.

D.C. "Dash" Goff, a Fayetteville horseman and neighbor of Hamm, said his father, Gene Goff, brought Hamm to Fayetteville upon his graduation from veterinary school in the early 1960s. He said Hamm worked for three years as resident veterinarian on the Goffs' Verna Lea Farm, After Hamm establish a clinic on an adjoining farm he remained on call for Goff and John Askew, another local horseman, for several years.

"He was a dear friend," Goff said.

Goff said Hamm was active in establishing the breeding programs involving Noholme II, a champion thoroughbred the Goffs brought to Arkansas from Australia, and Nodouble, an offspring of the Australian horse named world champion thoroughbred in 1969 and 1970.

Goff said Hamm was one of those dynamos, up at 5 in the morning and going "til after dark."

Hamm attended Arkansas Technical University from 1947 to 1949 and the University of Arkansas from 1957 to 1958. He received his bachelor of science degree from Oklahoma State University in 1960 and his doctorate of veterinary medicine in 1962.

He was past president of the Arkansas Veterinary Medical Association and the Arkansas Thoroughbred Breeders Association, and a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association and the American Association of Equine Practitioners. He received the Phi Zeta Award in 1960, the Dean Orr Award in 1961, the Dean McElroy Award in 1962 and the Alumni Top 10 Award in 1962.

He was a Mark Morris Fellow in 1962 at OSU and also was voted the Outstanding Veterinarian of 1982 by the Arkansas Veterinary Medical Association.

Hamm took part in anesthesia research with Dr. E.W. Jones at OSU from 1959 to 1961, and was part of a Mark Morris Project on the effect of anesthesia and resuscitation on shock in the dog from 1961 to 1962.

He had his own equine practice in Fayetteville from 1962 until his death.

Survivors are his wife, Gelene Hamm of the home; a son, David Doyne Hamm; two daughters, Deborah Jean Hamm Boyce and Nancy Louise Hamm Gibson; and three grandchildren.
