Irene Sitton Ward, born in Springtown on Oct. 14, 1915, to Grover and Ila Sitton, departed this life on July 30, 2004, to be with her heavenly Father, after a long and valiant battle with cancer. She was married 59 years to the late Fred Ward. She was a member of the Springtown Church of Grist, Gentry Garden Club and the Springtown Homemakers.

Irene was a devoted mother of four, Ronald Ward (deceased). Donald Ward (Judy) of Springdale, Mary (Jim) Montamat of Tulsa, Okla., and Sharon (Richard) Bell of Columbia, Tenn.; grandmother of nine, Steven Montamat of Tulsa, Thomas Montamat of Tulsa, Ward Bell of Fort Shafter, Hawaii, David Bell of Columbia, Tenn., Susan Rauhoff of Phoenix, Ariz., Sara Sheehan of Dallas, Texas, Julie Smith of Warner Robins, Ga., Sherri Massey of Edmond, Okla., and Vicki Plowman of Oceanside, Calif. Also surviving are nine great-grandchildren. She is also survived by one brother, Russell Sitton of Fort Worth, Texas.

Mother will be best remembered by her never-ending love of gardening. She loved her funny and friends dearly and shared her bountiful garden with them. Mother was an avid reader and enjoyed discussing current events. Each visit was a learning experience. Our mother will be sorely missed by all. Our friend, our confidant, our Dear Mother ... we will miss you, for an eternity. She was an inspiration to many with her determination, strength and will power. Mother never gave up hope for a miracle or a cure.

Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 2, at Fairmount Cemetery with Brother Hugh Jeffus officiating. The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 1 at Wasson Funeral Home in Siloam Springs.

Memorials may be made to Springtown Church of Christ, Springtown, 72734. To all she said, "Plant a flower or a vegetable in remembrance of me and share the bounty with someone you love and remember to thank God for the harvest."
