GILMORE, Leon - Leon Gilmore, 20-year-old son of Mrs. M.C. Gilmore, was almost instantly killed Tuesday noon at their home in the northeast part of town by the accidental discharge of his shot gun. Young Gilmore had been hunting and when he stepped upon the porch of the home is supposed to have stumbled or attempted to set the gun down. The porch was being refloored and instead of getting the butt of the gun on a board, it slipped through to the ground. The hammer of the gun must have caught on the edge of the board for an examination shows the firing pin to have been deeply driven into the shell. Most of the load of shot struck him in the lower part of the abdomen, while part struck him in the left wrist and arm, and also in the face. No one saw the accident but O.F. Day, who was working on the house, heard him cry, "I'm shot," and as he ran around the house to investigate saw the boy step off the porch and run out the front way, trying to make his way across the street to the residence of Dr. Geo. M. Love. Dr. Love had heard the shot and glanced out of the window just in time to see young Gilmore start across the street and then crumple face down as he reached the center of the road. He went to him at once but the boy never spoke again and died within a very few moments. Young Gilmore was the only child and with his mother and grandmother had lived here for eight years, coming here from Red Oak, Iowa eight years ago. He attended Rogers high school and also the John Brown College at Siloam Springs. He worked for a time for the Rogers Daily Post and more recently for the Small Electric Co. He was a likeable young fellow and his untimely death was not only a great blow to his mother and grandmother but to the entire community as well. Funeral services will be held this afternoon at 2:30 at the Church of Christ and will be conducted by Rev. A.A. DuLaney of the First Baptist church. Interment in Rogers cemetery.
