SHEFFIELD, Martha N. MARTIN - Martha N. Sheffield (or Grandma Sheffield, as she was familiarly called) died at her home in the southwest part of this county on April 4th, 1894. Her maiden name was Martin and was born Sept. 14, 1821 in Henry county, Va.; was married to T.C. Sheffield in Patrick county, Va. on the 29th day of Nov. 1839, who survives her, though he is in very feeble health. The aged couple had "shared each other's joys and cares" for fifty-five years and reared a large family - the youngest now being thirty years old. They came to this county in 1856 and have lived continuously at the home where grandma died. Grandma Sheffield had lived a consistent member of the Christian church since 1856. She was kind to all and was loved by all who knew her. It has often been said of her that "if there was a good woman on earth she was one of them." She had been in poor health for years and for three months prior to her death she had been seriously ill; but she bore it without a murmur of complaint and with fortitude. It is a great bereavement to her children to part with a mother and especially to those who remain at the old homestead to care for the aged father. At every turn they will see something to remind them of mother; but they can look forward to that bright day when they will all meet where there is no more parting nor sorrowing hearts. Grandpa Sheffield, together with all his children, desires to thank the neighbors and friends who so kindly assisted them in their hour of need and assured them that they will always have a warm place in their hearts.
