GAMBLE, Sophronia CALLIS McKissick - The passing of Mrs. Sophronia Callis Gamble Monday night takes away another of those pioneer women who lived previous and through the war between the states and whose lives were filled with excitement, hardship and suffering. Mrs. Gamble was 88 years old at the time of her death and had lived on the old McKissick homestead, two miles south of Hiwasse, for 61 years. Following the funeral services held Tuesday she was buried in the McKissick family cemetery on the farm. Here are buried her first husband, Captain Dan McKissick and his parents, Mr. and Mrs. David McKissick. Several of the McKissick slaves are said to have been buried there also. Mrs. Gamble was born near Lebanon, Tenn. in 1840 and came to Benton county with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Callis, when she was 13 years old. She had lived 76 years in this county. Her parents first located on Pea Ridge but a year later took up the homestead that is now occupied by her brother, Andrew J. Callis. Mrs. Gamble remembered well the thrilling war days and of the killing of David McKissick who was shot in the door of his cabin by federal bush-whackers. By her marriage in 1868 to Captain McKissick two of the most prominent families of the county were united. Uncle Wade Sikes, a dear friend of both families, performed the ceremony. Captain McKissick died in 1907. She was married a second time to G.S. Gamble, a well to do farmer in that section. He died in 1927. Since that time her niece, Mrs. Luther Fletcher and Mr. Fletcher have lived with her. Up until a year ago Mrs. Gamble was quite strong and healthy and took pleasure in milking her cow and caring for her chickens. There were no children by either marriage and her brother, Andrew J. Callis, is the only close relative.
