Alphonso Phillip Mitchell was born on Dec 3, 1845 in Hardeman County, Tennessee. He was the son of Dr. Alphonso Franklin Mitchell and Sarah Ann Phillip. He married his first wife, Nancy Holland Hawkins in Saline county Arkansas on Mar 18, 1871. They had had six children together; John, William, Alphonso, Mary, Frederick and Charles Mitchell.
He was left with six children to raise on his own when his wife died shortly after the birth of the sixth child. He remarried to his wife's widowed mother, Rachel Richards Hawkins on Sept 10, 1889 in Traskwood, Saline, Arkansas. He was the postmaster of Traskwood and also owned a small mercantile store there.
He died in Traskwood, Arkansas on Jan 29, 1893. The inscriptions on his headstone are: "Those who knew him best will bless his name and keep his memory dear while life shall last." The bottom of the stone says, "erected by his wife Rachel and Bro(ther Sam.)
