Obituary
Mary Alberta Ewing ascended to her eternal home at 7:00 a.m. on September 8, 2011. She was the second child born to Henry C. and Belva Mae Haggard at Manila, AR, October 28, 1913. Her parents, six sisters, and two brothers preceded her in death. When she was 10 years old, the Haggard family moved to Kennett, MO. She graduated with honors from Kennett High School in 1930.

She believed knowledge replaced fear, and education was the key to progress. She had a curious mind and a thirst for knowledge. Her insatiable hunger to know resulted in her becoming a lifelong learner that eventually prompted her to pile up over 250 hours of college credits from Southwest Missouri State University, Southeast Missouri State University, Henderson State University, and Ouachita Baptist University. In 1962, she graduated from a medical self-help training course. Over a period of 30 plus years, she earned a B.S.E. degree in Elementary Education; a M.S.E. degree in Secondary Education, majoring in Social Studies; and a special education degree, majoring in counseling.

She served as teacher and principal for 20 years in Springfield and Kennett, MO, Public Schools. Twenty additional years were spent in the Arkadelphia Public Schools as teacher, team leader of over one hundred 6th grades, and as a counselor. During several summers, she taught remedial reading to college students at Ouachita Baptist College in Arkadelphia, AR.

Believing God created her to touch the lives of the youth of her country, she enjoyed having a part in helping and encouraging them to achieve up to their potential – physically, intellectually, and spiritually. Alberta retired in 1975.

In 1930, while attending S.W. Missouri University in Springfield, MO, she met Richard Ewing, whom she married on April 13, 1933. To this union Dr. Jon Richard Ewing was born. Richard went to be with his Lord April 28, 1995, fifteen days after their 62nd wedding anniversary. They moved to Heber Springs in 1990 to be near their son, Dr. Jon R. Ewing and family. On April 9, 2001, Alberta was preceded in death by her only child, Dr. Jon R. Ewing.

Alberta is survived by three grandsons, Jon Richard Ewing and wife, Tisha, of Jackson, TN, Dr. Sabin Ewing and Suegena, and their daughters Elayna and Alyssa of Nashville, TN, and Corbin Ewing (of Jonesboro, AR, currently attending the U.S. National Guard Boot Camp) and Brittany and his mother, Rhonda, of Heber Springs; great granddaughters, Savannah Grace and Juliette; great grandson, Jon Harrison; and many nieces and nephews in southeast Missouri.

Alberta surrendered her life to her Lord at age 11 and was baptized and became a member of First Baptist Church of Kennett, MO. As a firm believer, she felt God calls us to love and serve others. Besides teaching, she had served during the years in several areas of her church, school, and community. She was still serving at her death. For fifty plus years, she taught Sunday School classes, sang in choirs, served as President of W.M.U., Associational Recreation Director at church camps, and led Bible courses. She was a life member of NRTA and ARTA. Her recent ministries included a faithful member of Fidelis Sunday School Class, an Intercessory Prayer Warrior, Morning Glory Singers at Southridge Nursing Home, and Joy Singers at First Baptist Church, Heber Springs.

Since retiring, Alberta has enjoyed using her artistic talents. She has painted several oil paintings, written a book of poems, and written her autobiography. Other forms of art work are on display in her home.

A celebration of Alberta's homecoming will be held Sunday, Sept. 11, at the Olmstead Chapel. Visitation will be held at 1:30 p.m. with services beginning at 3:00 p.m. with her grandsons speaking at the service. Serving as pallbearers will be her friends and family. Her body will rest in Cleburne County Memorial Gardens beside her husband and son.
