Shirley Jean VanVliet, 55 year old resident of Spring, Texas, died August 20, 2014, at Vitas Hospice in The Woodlands, Texas. Born March 9, 1959 in San Jose, California, she was the daughter of Roland Parson and Marian (Snow) Parson. Shirley was the valedictorian of both her high school and college classes and graduated from Northeast Louisiana University (now the University of Louisiana at Monroe), Summa Cum Laude, with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing.
Shirley worked for many years in various nursing settings and most recently spread joy and information in the Public Contact section of the Lincoln VA Regional Office.
Shirley was passionate about education, human rights, and finding truth. She believed in compassion and respect for others and using science and reason to find answers to preserve our planet and improve the lives of humanity.
She was preceded in death by her father, Roland Parson.
She is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Lisa and Ben Zoellick of Spring, Texas, and Christina and Larry Lee and her grandson, Aiden Lee of Lincoln, Nebraska; her mother, Marian Parson of Siloam Springs, Arkansas; her sister and brother-in-law, Debbie and Glenn Hill and her nephews, Austin and Jason Hill; her brother and sister-in-law, Jeff and Pam Parson, and her nieces, Lauren and Morgan Parson; and her aunts and uncles, Carol and Ray Birge, Bill and Naomi Parson, Dola and Bill Young; and numerous cousins.
Funeral services will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Developments in Literacy (http://www.dil.org/) which focuses on educating children and empowering communities.
