Mr. Charley Ankton, son of the late Mannie Ankton and the late Bertha Shugart, was born in Sparkman, Arkansas on March 13, 1919. At any early age he joined with the Mt. Olive AME Church in Dalark, Arkansas and served faithfully until moving to California 1952. In November 1942 at the young age of 23, he was drafted and served in World War II. He was awarded 4 Bronze Stars and a Good Conduct Medal. He received an Honorable Discharge with the rank of Corporal. He was proud of his service medals and the 3866th Quartermaster Truck Company. In 1952, he moved from Arkansas to Berkeley, California where he be3gan to work for the General Service Administration (Government) in building maintenance and retired with 32 years of service. Charley was a devoted sports fan with a particular passion for Baseball. He was a very social and loving person who enjoyed family and friends. Charley united with Parks Chapel AME Church in 1954 and has been faithfully serving God and his church until his death. Charley departed this life on October 2, 2013 and transitioned to glory to be with his heavenly Father. He was preceded in death by his parents, Mannie and Bertha Ankton, brother Roosevelt Ankton; five sisters: Lucille Ankton, Myrtle Jackson, Jessie Blacknall, Mary Craig Metcalf, Florida Goodwin and uncle, Albert Shugart. Charley leaves to cherish his legacy, three special nephews, Robert (Cora) Jackson of Richmond, Ca., Charley Jackson of Pittsburg, Ca., Vernon (Finas) Ankton of Benicia, Ca. and a host of nieces and nephews, other relatives, friends and his church family. Public visitation is will be Friday, October 11, 2013 from 12 noon until 5:00 p.m. at the funeral home. A celebration of his life will be held on Satruday, October 12, 2013 at 2:30 p.m. at Mt. Olive AME Church in Dalark, Arkansas. Rev. Linda Butler will officiate. Interment will be in Centerpoint Cemetery.
