HARLAN, Amstead Hoffman - Amstead Hoffman Harlan was born in Butler county, Ohio November 24, 1882. After a brief illness he passed away at 8 o'clock March 7, 1909. Mr. Harlan was married in 1846 to Miss Margret Bailey and to this union were born seven children: John M. of Norman, Neb.; Martha F. Sheldon of Walworth, Neb.; William M. and Arthur B. of this city, Ashley R. and James J. of Minden, Neb.; and Mary M. Taylor of Portland, Oregon. Mr. Harlan was elected judge of Kearney county, Neb. in 1876, was re-elected in 1878. He also filled various local offices. He was a member of the Masonic order for 59 years and both he and Mrs. Harlan were members of the Christian church, the latter leaving the church below to join the church above in 1871. Mr. Harlan came to Arkansas in 1894 from Norman, Neb. Since that time he has lived on his fruit farm, three and one-half miles west of Rogers.
