Electric Shock Fatal To Rogers Businessman
ROGERS—A 62-year-old Rogers man was electrocuted about 4:20 p.m. Saturday when he came into contact with high-voltage electric lines while attempting to connect a service wire.
Herbert E. Hawkins of 118 N. Third St. was working on the utility pole while his son, John remained on the ground. The younger Hawkins told police he heard a crackling sound, called to his father, and receiving no answer went inside and called for the Rogers rescue unit.
When he ran back outside he found his father's body on the ground. Benton County Coroner Carl McKinney ruled the death accidental.
Hawkins was founder of the Hawkins Co., electrical and plumbing supplies and was operator of the Herbert Hawkins Ditching and Rock Removal Co.
He was born Aug. 6, 1903 in Rogers and was a member of the Methodist Church.
Survivors include the widow, Mrs. Nell Hawkins of the home; another son, Burl of Houston, Tex,; one daughter, Mrs. Charles O. Hall of Rogers and three grandchildren.
Funeral services was to be at 10 a.m. today in the Callison Chapel with burial in Rogers Cemetery.
