Robert Frankin Ray, Sr. was the son of James Madison Ray and Mary Elizabeth Rainwater. He married Mary Ann "Belle" Lawler, who was the daughter of Patrick Lawler and Martha (Bowles) Scarber/Scarborough.

Mary Ann "Belle" Ray was the daughter of Martha (Bowles) Scarber/Scarborough and Patrick Lawler. She married Robert Franklin Ray, Sr. They had the following children: Eula, Sudie Belle, Dovie May, James Idus "Dick", Robert Franklin "Frank" Ray, Jr., who was born 5 months after his father's death. They had two other children that died as infants.
