Claud Melvin King was born 10 July 1896 in Charleston, Franklin, Arkansas. He was the 2nd of the 8 children born to John Henry King and Martha Mattie Robertson King. Siblings: William Isaac King (1894), Bertha T King (1897) Mamie F. King [Craig] (1900), Clarence Alvin King (1902), John Henry King (1904), Lawrence Edward King (1906), Clara R King (1909). He married Lela Jennette Braden in 1916 and they were the parents of 5 children: Wayne, Vernon, Dorothy, Pauline and Claud. Claud worked as a foreman at a furniture factory. He passed away 6 December 1984.

Lela Jennette Braden King, 101, of Fort Smith died Wednesday, Dec. 11, 2002, in Fort Smith. She was born Feb. 18, 1901, in Van Buren. She was the widow of Claud Melvin King. They were the owners of King's Nursery at their home. She was a member of the Assembly of God Church, a charter member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church, formerly Second United Methodist Church, and a member of the World War II Army Mothers Club. Funeral will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Fentress Mortuary Chapel with burial at Barling City Cemetery. She is survived by two daughters, Dorothy Louise Hummel of Pottsville, Penn., and Pauline Lela Buffington of Fairfield, Calif.; three sons, Wayne F. King of Fort Smith, Vernon F. King of Richmond, Calif., and Claud Christopher King of Fort Smith; a sister, Mary Ellen Cochran of Texas; 11 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren and six great-great grandchildren. Pallbearers will be Gary Hummel and Billy Jo Gibson. Family will visit with friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
