Freda Shilling Sandlin Webb, 86, of Little Rock, died Friday, April 24, 2009, in Little Rock after a brief hospitalization. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Freda was a member of Pleasant Valley Church of Christ. She loved her church family and her own family very much. She adored her grandchildren and two great-granddaughters and was always happy to help them anyway she could.
Freda was born September 21, 1922, in Greenbrier to Carl and Amma Shilling. She grew up in Russellville before the family moved to Ola (Yell County) in 1938, where she would graduate from high school in 1941. Freda attended Arkansas Tech Special Educational Course, and then taught elementary school at Perryville for two years and Ola for one year. She married H.J. (Jake) Sandlin in 1945, a union lasting 42 years until his death. She married Dr. Robert B. Webb of Chicago in 1990, who she had known since childhood. They loved to travel throughout the U.S. and to Canada, and made frequent trips to Branson, Missouri, sometimes taking a grandchild along.
Freda was proud of her active work in her sons’ schools through the PTA, serving as PTA president twice. She was honored with a life membership in the PTA for her dedicated service.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Mary Lee Sandlin; and a stepsister, Edith Holcomb. She is survived by her husband, Robert; two sons and their wives, Jack and Ev Sandlin of Pine Bluff, and Jake and Terry Sandlin of Maumelle; two stepdaughters Colleen Becker of Chicago, and Becky Hileman of Guy; grandchildren Derek Sandlin of Kansas City; Jay Sandlin of Little Rock; Dr. Adam Sandlin and his wife, Hollie, of Little Rock; Rachel Harness and her husband, Sam, of Conway; Luke Sandlin of Maumelle; Amy Becker and Mary Becker, both of Chicago; and Heather Hileman of Guy; and great-granddaughters Brittan Elizabeth Sandlin and Hadley Grayce Sandlin, both of Little Rock.
The family expresses its gratitude to the doctors and the ICU nurses at Baptist Health Medical Center for their care and compassion.
Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, April 29, 2009 at Roller-Chenal Funeral Home Chapel, (501)224-8300. Burial will be at Riverwood Memorial Gardens in Maumelle.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home.
