Republican Cemetery
Faulkner County, Arkansas
Submitted February 17, 2003, by David Lee

From the publication by the REPUBLICAN COMMUNITY CEMETERY BOARD, INC.
Compiled, typed and edited by: Delmar and Josephine McKenzie, Thayer and Marguerite Hendrickson, and David Lee.

The community was first called Cash Springs because Gilbert Casharago owned the land that has two springs, within a few feet of each other, that furnished water for the store, church and school. Cash Springs was the name on the application for a Post Office made in 1897. There was already a Cash Springs Post Office in Arkansas. Because it was during a Republican administration the name of Republican was applied for and accepted. Since that time the community has been known as Republican.

For fifty or more years the cemetery has been called the same as the community, Republican. Before that it was known as the Hendrickson Cemetery. Recently, Mrs. Rena Castleberry Reynolds told us the cemetery was originally called the Crouch Cemetery. She also said the first person buried there was a black man from Solomon Grove. Legend has it that this man was working for a family in the area when he died. The Cadron was too high to take him home so he was buried here. This is believed to be some time during the early 1860’s.

The earliest date on a marker is Gilbert Casharago (Casharagi on the marker) 1806 – 1886. Knowing that there were many people living in the area for many years before this time, it is reasonable to believe that there were several burials before this date.
