Arkansas

Wife of James Webster Halbert
Lillian Harden Halbert, lovingly known as "Mammie", was born to Oliver Cromwell Harden and Louise A. "Lou" Ewing in Tennessee. She married her 2nd Cousin, James Webster Halbert on Christmas Eve of 1889 in Lewisburg, Marshall County, Tennessee. The 3 children born of this union was a daughter, Tommye Lenice(1892-1977), Mary Lou (Nov 1894-?)and a son, William Paul(1898-1977). Jim and Katherine left Tennessee in a covered wagon about 1893. I had a vinyl record of "Mammie" telling about her trip, but unforunately, it was lost in a flood. To my memory, the 2nd child became sick with scarlet fever. She must have been a newborn. She gave the children the brine from a picle barrel as medicine. I don't know if both children had it or not, but I know that Mary Lou died. I don't have an exact date. The winter was hard that year and the family could not proceed on to Oklahoma to meet up with other brothers and sisters who had made the journey. They settled in Caldwell, Arkansas, a small town north of Forrest City. Jim had a blacksmith shop and a gristmill. Lillie served lunches out of the home for farm laborers. After James died she lived her remaining life with her daughter, Lenice, and helped her raise her children. She died of old age just 6 days short of her 92nd birthday.
