A young farmer, cattleman and rice grower of St. Francis County. He was born July 27,1925, in Memphis, son of Fred N. and Varnelle (Bonner) McCollum, prominent citizens of Forrest City. The senior Mr. McCollum as editor-publisher of The Daily Times-Herald is one of the state's most influential daily newspapermen. After attending Clarendon High School, he studied at Georgia Military Academy and Arkansas State Teachers College. During World War II, he served from 1944 to 1946 in the U.S. Army. After two years overseas in the Southwest Pacific Theatre, and some time in Tokyo attending The Army College, he returned to Forrest City. He married Miss Mary Allison Tipton, daughter of John H. and the late Elizabeth (Sweet) Tipton, on Sep.5,1947. They have three daughters, Andrea Allison, Varnelle Bonner, and Elizabeth Sweet.
