Thurman Wood, 92, of Mountain Home died Thursday, Aug. 9, 2007. A funeral will be 10 a.m. Monday at Roller Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Dr. David Johnson and the Rev. Max Pyron officiating. Visitation will be noon-9 p.m. Sunday at Roller Funeral Home with family receiving friends from 6-8 p.m.
He was born April 29, 1915, in Yellville to Lee and Dora Matthews Wood. Mr. Wood graduated from University of Arkansas in 1942 and was employed by UA for 35 years as a county extension agent in Calhoun County from 1945-1954, Prairie County from 1954-1956 and Baxter County from 1956-1977. Because of his accomplishments in these three counties, he was in a select group of agents to be honored by the National Association of Agents in 1960 for outstanding service. Thurman served as chairman of the Democratic Party of Baxter County for 15 years. He was a past president of Farm Bureau and Baxter County Fair Board, a member of First Baptist Church and served as a deacon.
He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Norma Johnson Wood of the home; a daughter, Carolyn Durham and her husband, Durelle, of Sand Key, Fla.; one granddaughter, Nicole Fowler Kamman and her husband, Trey; and three great-grandchildren, Caroline, Jake and Barrett, all of Oxford, Miss.; and two brothers, Earl Wood of Yellville and Ewell Wood of Springfield, Mo. Thurman was preceded in death by his parents, eight brothers, one sister and two children, Sammy Lane Wood and Larry Thurman Wood.

Norma Elizabeth Johnson Wood died Friday July 25, 2014. She was the daughter of Ray and Gertrude (Herron) Johnson. She was born in Whiteville, AR on June 27, 1918. She graduated from Cotter High School in 1934 at the age of 15. She attended Arkansas Tech College and graduated from the University of Arkansas in Monticello, AR with a degree in library sciences. She was preceded in death by her husband, Thurman Wood, to whom she was married for seventy years and two children, Sammy Lane and Larry Thurman. She is survived by her daughter, Carolyn Durham (Durelle) of Clearwater Beach, FL, one grandchild, Nicole Kamman (Trey), and three great grandchildren, Caroline, Jake and Barrett of Oxford, MS. Two brothers, Bill Johnson (Marlene) of Flippin, AR, Bob Johnson of Las Vegas, NEV and one sister, Anna Bell Grove, of Bothell, WA.
She was a school teacher and librarian for schools in Hampton, AR, Hazen, AR and Mountain Home, AR. She was instrumental with her knowledge of libraries in helping get the Arkansas State University accredited in Mountain Home, AR. They honored her by naming the college library – the Norma Wood library.
Visitation will be Wednesday, July 30th at Roller Funeral Home Chapel from 12:30 to 2 pm, with services immediately following. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Norma Wood Library at Arkansas State University in Mtn. Home.
