Mrs. Nellie Carlene Hammer age 93, of Forrest City died Thursday, January 12, 2012 at the Forrest City Medical Center.
Mrs. Hammer was born September 5, 1918 in Memphis. She was the daughter of Virgil Harrison McEuen and Audry McEwen. She leaves behind her husband of 76 years, Lyle William Hammer. She was preceded in death by all eleven of her brothers and sisters, Her oldest son, Lyle William Jr. and two granddaughters Jennifer and Ashley Hammer. She is survived by seven children, Sue Hansel Hammer of Germantown, Barbara Hammer of Oakland, Tennessee, Gloria Hammer Doty and husband Lindell of Gainesville, Florida, Tyler Hammer and wife Carolyn of Forest City, Linda Hammer Hardison and husband Bill of Memphis, Janice Hammer Evans of Memphis and Marty Hammer and wife Melody of Little Rock. The Hammers have ten grandchildren Christopher Hammer and wife Betsy, Richard Totty and wife Dana, Timothy Totty and wife Teresa and Michelle Evans all of Memphis; Robin Totty of Oakland, Michael Totty and wife Brenda of Canada, Dr. Lynnette Doty Henderson and husband David of Symrna, Tennessee, Dr. Randell Doty and wife Donna of Gainesville, Heather Hammer Moore of Benton, Arkansas and Rebecca Burleson Noel and husband Andrew of Haneohe, HI. There are fourteen great-grandchildren.
During World War II Mrs. Hammer worked for National Bank of Commerce in Memphis as a teller, and then kept books for her husband's businesses, until he retired. As a grandmother, she took care of her grandchildren that lived in Forrest City. She was a member of the Christian Church in Forrest City until it disbanded. Then she and her husband became members of the Lindauer Road Church of Christ in Forrest City. She belonged to a garden club when she lived in Bartlett, and enjoyed the ladies activities at church. Mrs. Hammer had lived in Memphis, Bartlett, Laurel, Mississippi, Ridgely, Tennessee, Hot Springs, Little Rock and Forrest City where she had lived for the last forty plus years. She was known of her kind and loving manner. Her family and those who came to know her will miss her.
Services will be held Saturday, January 14, 2012 at Stevens Funeral Home chapel at 2:00 p.m. with burial to follow at Forrest Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1 to 2 before the service. Visit online registry at stevensfuneralhome.net. Under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home.
