Former Blytheville Municipal Judge Max Beale Harrison died Tuesday, Aug. 15, 2006, in Baptist Memorial Hospital at Memphis after an extended illness.
Judge Harrison lived in Blytheville for all of his 81 years after his birth to Circuit Judge and Mrs. Zal Harrison in 1924.
His long career in law began with private practice of civil and criminal law. He served as deputy prosecutor for Cross County and juvenile court referee for Mississippi County before being elected in 1972 as municipal judge, a post he held for 24 years, before retiring in 1996.
He was the longest-standing member of First Presbyterian Church in Blytheville, where he served as a deacon and elder and was Presbytery Delegate to the General Assembly in 1972. He was also one of the founders and the first chairman of the board for Presbyterian Christian Academy and served for several years on the board of directors for Mississippi County Union Mission.
He was a beloved husband, father and grandfather, leaving behind his wife of 54 years, Floyce Harrison, and four children, Melanie Sugg and husband Jim Sugg of Jonesboro and their sons, Phil Sugg and Joe Sugg and wife Ali Sugg, Nancy Gurley and husband Dr. Dean Gurley of Blytheville and their children, Katie Gurley Watkins and husband Darrell Watkins and Max Gurley, Mayor Barrett Harrison and children, Laura, Will and Ben of Blytheville and fiance Lyn Button of Hot Springs and Amanda Smart and daughter Madeline Smart of Memphis.
He also leaves two brothers, Dr. Bill Harrison of DeLand, Fla., and Dr. Pat Harrison of Brinkley.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Max Beale Harrison Jr.; one sister, Jeanne Harrison Carter; and a brother, A.S. "Todd" Harrison.
