ARROYO GRANDE, Calif. - Betty Marie Green-Deiss, 87, passed away on Sept. 29, 2011. She was born in Daviess County, Ind., on Sept. 29. 1924, to William and Rachael Green.

The second oldest of four children, she grew up in the small town of Bicknell, Ind. At the age of 15, she left home to live as an in-home assistant for another family to help her parents support her family.

In 1942, she met and soon after married Harry F. Deiss, her husband of 55 years. They lived in several small towns in southern Indiana while Harry worked in mining and construction. Betty was a stay-at-home mom to her three young children and did volunteer work at their local church.

In 1952, they moved to California for better employment with Harry's brother, Ed, in his home construction business. During that time, Betty sold Tupperware and did in-home child care. After her children were older, Betty became the bead cook at the Garden Grove Unified School District for several years.

In the late 70s Betty and Harry moved to Springdale, Ark., where they were happy growing a garden and attending the First Assembly of God Church in Springdale. Betty loved to cook and was popular for her home-baked goodies, and her breads and cakes were often featured in the local newspaper for her special recipes, fundraisers and auctions.

After Harry's death in 1998, Betty returned to California to be near her family, where she has lived with her daughter, Sonna and son-in-law, Ken Gideons.

Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Harry Deiss; their son, John Allen Deiss; her sister, Doris Ison; and her brothers, Dale Green and Ben Green.

Betty is survived by her daughters, Sonna Gideons (Ken) and Margaret Loyd (Kenny), six grandchildren, Roxanne Hall (Bob), Sheila Hollander (Dan), Steve Timmerman (Kim), Shawn Deiss-Byrum (Jill), Eric Deiss-Johnson and Tyson Loyd; and eight great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held Friday, Oct. 14, 2011, from 10 a.m. until service time. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. at Bluff Cemetery in Springdale, with the Rev. Bob Fant officiating.
