George Riley Sturgeon, 80, of Lavaca passed away Thursday, July 30, 2009, in Lavaca. He was born Jan. 29, 1929, in the Riverdale community to George W. Sturgeon and Leveatta Mae Choates Sturgeon. He was a retired truck driver and dispatcher for Crain Industries in Fort Smith and was a member of the Assembly of God in Lavaca. He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Leveatta Sturgeon; his wife, Idalice; two sons, George Sturgeon and Joe Head; and two brothers, Rodney and Ray Dean Sturgeon.
Service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 1, 2009, at Smith Mortuary Chapel with the Rev. Todd Rowland officiating and burial at Island Cemetery northeast of Lavaca under the direction of Smith Mortuary.
Survivors are two daughters, Sylvia Carey of Lavaca and Barbara Goodman of Vinita, Okla.; three sisters, Lamanda Deel and Marie Flanagan, both of Fort Smith, and Elizabeth Blanton of Palestine, Texas; a very special friend and companion, Mary Floyd of Lavaca; 11 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be Mike Conger, Mike McGrath, Danny Sharp, Robert Sturgeon, David Holmes and Glen Higginbotham.
Honorary pallbearer will be Freddie Graham.
Idalice
July 3,1929-Sept 7,2007
Idalice was a member of the Assembly of God in Lavaca. She was a retired truck driver. She was preceded in death by her parents, Leslie and Rosa Hagebush Seaton, and two sons, George Ray Sturgeon and Joe Heard.
She is survived by her husband of 43 years, George Sturgeon of the home; two daughters, Sylvia Holmes and Barbara Goodman; a sister, Rosie Sasser; two brothers, James Seaton, and Ray Seaton; 11 grandchildren and 14 great-granchildren.
She was buried on Sept 11, 2007 under the direction of Smith Morturary of Charleston. Pallbearers were Mike Conger, Mike McGrath, Danny Sharp, Robert Sturgeon, David Holmes and Freddie Graham.
