BELLA VISTA — William A. Hughes, 84, of Bella Vista died March 28, 2004, at his home. He was born July 17, 1919, in Urich, Mo., to Bernice William and Lula Mae Dutton Hughes. He was a principal in the Kansas City, Mo., public school system. He was an Air Force veteran of World War II. He moved to Bella Vista in 1982 from Kansas City. He was a member of First United Methodist Church of Bella Vista. He enjoyed golfing and was a member of the 18 Hole Men's League and the Men's Chorus.

Survivors include his wife, Mary E. "Betty" Hughes of Bella Vista; two sons, Steven P. Hughes of Belton, Mo., and Stuart W. Hughes of Brookfield, Mo.; one stepson, Kit Kubis of Kansas City; one daughter, Deborah J. Kempf of Kansas City, Kan.; two stepdaughters, Kathy Bailey of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Jill Kubis of Wickenburg, Ariz.; two sisters, Mary E. Essex and Norma Pepe; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.

A private memorial service will be held at Bella Vista Funeral Home and Crematory with the Rev. Larry R. Williams and the Rev. Wayne L. Bartruff officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church, 20 Boyce Drive, Bella Vista, 72714, or to the Alzheimers Association, 3405 Bella Vista Way, Bella Vista, 72714.
