Mrs. Mary M. Carlock, 81, widow of the late David C. Carlock, died November 6 at 3:30 a.m. at the home of her son, Bern Carlock, a short distance east of Springdale. Burial was in Buckeye cemetery, in the vicinity of Goshen, southeast of Springdale, November 8, services being conducted by Rev. L.R. Morrow. The pall bearers were Jesse and Alfred McCoy, Sidney Pitts and Harrison Langham.
Mrs. Carlock was a daughter of John P. Chappell, and was born at Murfreesboro, Tenn., January 28, 1841, coming with her parents to Arkansas in 1858. Following the close of the Civil War she taught in the schools of Madison and Benton Counties until her marriage to David C. Carlock at Huntsville October 27, 1870. Mr. Carlock was one of the pioneer citizens of Madison County, and for a number of years resided at Huntsville, where he followed his occupation of blacksmith and wood workman. They moved from Huntsville to a farm on Brush Creek near Whitener, where Mr. Carlock died in 1912. A few years later Mrs. Carlock came to Springdale with her son, Bern Carlock, and this has since been her home. She was a mother of seven children, only three of whom are now living; James A. Carlock of Neosho, Mo.; Ralph E. Carlock of Harris, this county, and Bernard O. Carlock of Springdale.
