LEPANTO — Charles Alexander Ashcraft, 93, of Lepanto died Sunday, March 16, 2008, at St. Bernards Medical Center in Jonesboro.

Mr. Ashcraft farmed for the Bonds family for more than 50 years. He was a lifetime crappie fisherman and taught all of his sons and grandsons the art of fishing. He was a carpenter and an avid gardener.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Floretta Ashcraft; son, Johnny; grandson, Houston; two brothers; and three sisters.

Survivors include five sons, Jack Ashcraft of East Moline, Ill., Charlie Ashcraft of West Memphis, Billy Ashcraft of Tyronza, Dennis Ashcraft of Harrisburg and Gene Ashcraft of Lepanto; four daughters, Betty Cockrell of Gilmore, Mary "Minnie" Slack of Lepanto, Patsy Thompson of Marshall and Sandra Dover of Jonesboro; 17 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren.

A celebration of his life will be today at 4 p.m. at Murphy Funeral Home with the Rev. Jim Duffel officiating. Burial will follow in Potter Memorial Cemetery under the direction of Murphy Funeral Home.

Active pallbearers will be grandsons, Keith Ashcraft, Dale Slack, Brian Dover, Chris Ashcraft, Tony Ashcraft, Jack Ashcraft Jr., Joe Ashcraft and Kyle Fulton.

Honorary pallbearers will be Arthur Bonds, Bryan Bonds, Everett Young, J.P. McCorkle and Johnny Franks.

Memorials may be made to the Cindy Slack Fund at Little River Bank.
