William Thomas "Tom" Hargis, 99, whose banking career spanned almost 75 years, died Sept. 24 in Huntsville Memorial Hospital.
Hargis was a merchant and taught short terms of school in Madison County before he moved to Huntsville and began his banking career with the First National Bank in March 1907. He later served as the bank's president and chairman of the board for many years.
He also was an organizer of the First State Bank of Springdale and the Bank of Kingston and remained active in both those institutions throughout much of his business career.
Hargis also served on the county selective service board for 27 years, on the state vocational school board for many years, and was active in civic and business affairs in Madison County.
Hargis was born Feb. 25, 1882, at Marble, the son of James C. and Mary L. Bunch Hargis.
Survivors include two sons, Bruce Hargis and James Hargis of Huntsville; two daughters, Mrs. Ruth Bunch of Portales, N.M., and Mrs. Mildred Witt of Fayetteville; 12 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
Services were Monday at 10 a.m. in Brashears Funeral Home Chapel with the Revs. Bill Williamson and Cecil Garrison officiating. Burial was in Huntsville Cemetery.
Pallbearers were grandsons. Honorary pallbearers were members of the board of directors of the First National Bank of Huntsville.
