John C. Durham was born 28 March 1888 in Mississippi, the son of Thomas and Mary Price Durham. He grew up with seven brothers and sisters: William Lucian, Guy Thomas, Ola Maye, Bryant Eugene, Ruby Elizabeth, Lilian Gertrude and Mary Blanche.
John was a farmer before entering the Navy 22 September 1917. There is little information about his service, but we know he was a fireman on a ship. In the Navy a fireman is a crew member that works in the engine room. They keep up the equipment
that moves the ship. John was discharged 31 June 1919.
