Harry Wages passed from this life, Dec. 28, 2004, in the way he had lived it -- in quiet dignity.

He was born in Fayetteville on Sept. 26, 1927, to Ruth Swink Wages and James E. Wages. He was a son, brother, husband, father, friend, citizen and patriot. From the span of his 77 years, he committed more than 28 of those in the service to his family and fellow Americans through his service in both the U.S. Navy and the Army. Thought he attended Hillcrest High, he left school in 1944, in his senior year, to join the U.S. Navy. This decision began a career in military service that spanned almost three decades, with tours of duty including Okinawa in the Pacific Campaign during World War II, the Korean War and two separate tours in Vietnam. He retired from military service in 1975, after completing an assignment in the Canal Zone in Panama.

The commendations and awards he received included the following: the World War II Victory Medal, American Campaign Medal, Asiatic/Pacific Campaign Medal, Good Conduct Medal (six awards), Army Commendation Medal (2nd Oak Leaf Cluster), Vietnam Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal (one Oak Leaf Cluster), Vietnam Campaign Medal, Soldiers Medal, Bronze Star Medal, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry, five Overseas Bars.

Mr. Wages was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Frank Wages. He is survived by his wife, Aurea Julietta Wages; two daughters, Frankie and Sue Terry Anne; seven grandchildren; a brother, Jim Wages, and two sisters, Emily Gann and Betsy Graham.

Harry Wages acknowledged his duty and sense of responsibility not only as a soldier, but as a family man and as a friend. For all his public service to his country, he was a private man who, following his military service, continued to serve those around him through his loyalty, honesty, sense of humor, courage and quiet strength. His wisdom and commitment to life survive in those he loved.

Services will be at 6 p.m. Thursday at Moore's Chapel in Fayetteville. Entombment will be held at noon Friday at National Cemetery, with military Honors.

Visitation will be from 3 to 5 p.m. Thursday at Moore's.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Washington Regional Hospice, 34 W. Colt Square, Fayetteville, 72703.
