March 7, 1943 - March 3, 2018

Johnny Lee Overby, 74, of Hot Springs, went to his eternal home on March 3, 2018. He was born in Ft. Smith, Arkansas on March 7, 1943, to Henry and Bertie Overby. John spent 53 happy years married to Ann Overby. John is preceded in death by his parents and his brother Glen Overby.

John was a member of the 1961 graduating class of Mountain Pine High School. His high school years provided lifelong friendships and his love for basketball gave him much pleasure. He completed his studies at UAMS School of Pharmacy in 1966. His life’s work was devoted to pharmacy, beginning as a delivery boy at Cain’s Drug Store, where he later worked as a Registered Pharmacist for Ish Cain. He went on to become co-owner of the store located on Albert Pike, which he renamed Family Drug Center. In 1988, he relocated his business and operated as The Medicine Shoppe until he sold the store in 2007. For the last 11 years, he has continued working as a relief pharmacist at various drug stores in the community. John was a very involved “Papa” to his three granddaughters, and whether it was dance recitals, soccer games, basketball games, or gymnastics, he loved making precious memories with them as they grew. John was a believer in Jesus Christ, and was a member of Hot Springs Baptist Church. His kind spirit and generous heart defined his life here on earth.

He is survived by his wife Ann Overby, and his children, Lara (Lance) Taubman of Black Canyon City, Arizona, and Teri Zaner of Hot Springs; as well as grandchildren, Maxine Taubman, Emily Zaner and Erin Zaner. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Pudge Powell; brothers-in-law, David Smith (Sally), Rickey Smith (Linda) and Mickey Sheppard, as well as several nieces and nephews that he loved dearly.

Visitation will be 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Thursday at Caruth-Hale Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Friday at Caruth-Hale Funeral Home Chapel with Brother Manley Beasley and Brother Mike Smith officiating.

Burial will follow at Memorial Gardens Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be his brothers-in-law David Smith, Rickey Smith, Mickey Shepherd; and also Jerry Jones, Glen Grisham, and Dr. Daniel Leiblong.

Honorary Pallbearers include his nephews Lance Powell, Kirk Powell, David Smith II, Vell Smith, Roger Overby and special friends Bob & Roxana Brown.

The family would like to thank Dr. Lynn Cleveland and the staff of Genesis Cancer Center and also the many health care workers of CHI St. Vincent that have provided excellent care to John over the last several years.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Smile Train, Heifer International or Haiti Missions through Hot Springs Baptist Church.
