Fealix Staggs
1817--1860

In the late 1980's, Emmit Dolan Acklin and Bob Bounds were doing research in the Katy Cemetery for a Wolf House publication. At that time, the Katy Cemetery was totally overgrown. They located several very old home carved gravestones that were under up to three inches of soil that had eroded over them. This marker for Fealix Staggs was among those found. Their first impression was that the inscription was some form or hieroglyphics. After studying the inscription for several weeks, Mr. Acklin realized that the inscription was for Fealix Staggs, and he determined that Mr. Staggs was born in 1817 and died in 1860. His impression was that the person that did the inscription could not read or write and that he had someone else point out what letters and figures should look like. As a result, the lower case and upper case letters are intermingled. It could be that person that did the inscription was dyslexic even though the disorder had not been diagnosed or even named at that time.
