Camille Verie Harris March 6, 1899-Jan 5, 1984

Leland Harris was born 6 June 1886 in Gum Springs Community , near Searcy, Arkansas, the son of Thomas Monroe and Susan Dodson Smith Harris. He grew up in a lively family with six brothers, Dewitt, Walter, Lester, Omer, Willie, and Richard and three sisters, Ethel, Mattie and Lillian. Leland attended school in Searcy, Arkansas.
Leland was 31 years old when he enlisted in the Army on 15 December 1917. He took his training in Texas and spent the remainder of his enlistment in Texas. The war ended before his unit could be shipped to France. This was a disappointment to him. His discharge was 21 November 1918. His oldest brother, Dewit, died at sea in the Spanish American War; Leland served in World War I; Willie was in World War II; and another brother fought in Spain during their Civil War.
After the army, he was a car inspector with the Missouri Pacific Railroad in Benton, Arkansas. Here he met and married Camille Verie Smith. Later they moved to Cherry Valley and then Camille's hometown, Wynne, Arkansas, where they raised three daughters, Dorothy Marie, Joyce Madeline, and Cathryn Camille. Leland joined the Arkansas Highway Department and worked there until his retirement. He was a life long member of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, a member of the American Legion, and an avid sports fan.
Leland Harris died in Wynne, on 6 October 1978 and was interred in Cogbill Cemetery. He was 92 years old.
