Hunting Mishap Kills Boy

A 17-year-old boy died early today from gunshot wounds he received in a Sunday afternoon hunting accident. James D. Graves, West Fork, was shot in the abdomen while hunting squirrels with three other boys, according to the Washington County Sheriff's Department.

The incident occurred about 500 yards north of Low Gap Church when of the boys dropped his 16-gauge shotgun while reloading it. The gun discharged and hit Graves. He wad taken to Washington Regional Medical Center where he died later.

Sheriff's deputies said investigation of the incident would continue.

Graves was the son of Harold R. and Sandra Spearman Graves, attended Greenland High School and was a member of Southside Baptist Church.

Survivors include his parents of the home; one sister, Kelley Graves of the home; three brothers, Harold R. Graves Jr., US Air Force, and Jeffrey and Michael Graves, both of the home; maternal grandmother, Mrs. Virginia Spearman, West Fork; paternal grandmother, Mrs. D.H. Graves, Hot Springs.

Services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday in Moore's Chapel, Fayetteville, with Rev. Ronald Raines officiating. Burial will be in Mineral Springs Cemetery near West Fork under the direction of Moore's.
