James C. Bates, 56, of Hardy died Dec. 25, 2004, at his residence.

Born June 2, 1948, in Little Rock, he was the son of Sherman and Merlene Actkinson Bates. He was a veteran of the United States Navy, serving from 1967 until 1971. He served on the Coral Sea.

He married Carol Bassham on June 11, 1972, at New Hope Baptist Church near Hardy. He was a member of Hardy United Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Carol Bates of the home; a son and daughter-in-law -- Darren and Carrie Bates of Hardy; a daughter and son-in-law, Karyn and Michael Fitch of Hardy; and six grandchildren -- Brady and Corey Bates and Kaci, Michael, Tricia and Dylan Fitch.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Sherman and Merlene Bates.

The funeral was Dec. 27 at New Hope Baptist Church with burial in the Oaklawn Cemetery at Highland. The Rev. Troy Harvey officiated. Arrangements were under the direction of Tri-County's Cherokee Chapel of Highland.

Pallbearers were James Nicholson, Wendell Jines, Dan Munroe, James French, Roger Shaw and Shawn Reed.

Honorary pallbearers were Max Hill, Dale Godwin, Bob Vance and Jeff Munroe.
