Obituary- Sarah Kathryn Phillips Atkins, 75, of Hamburg died Tuesday, September 16, 2008, at the Ashley County Medical Center. A native of Fountain Hill and a resident of Hamburg since 1960, she graduated from Fountain Hill High School in 1950 and served as the Ashley County Clerk from 1978 to 1994. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church where she was a past president of the United Methodist Women, an avid bridge player and enjoyed the Friday Night Ladies Supper Club.
She is survived by a son, Corry Page Atkins, of Monroe, Louisiana; a daughter, Jane Magnuson and husband Peter of Rosemount, Minnesota; a sister, Jane Cason of Anchorage, Alaska; two grandchildren, Haley Margaret and Bennett Joseph Magnuson; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, of 42 years, Gerald Sterling "Ted" Atkins; a son, Gerald Sterling "Teddy" Atkins, Jr.; her parents, Chase & Mildred Maxwell Phillips; and two brothers, Chase A. Phillips, Jr., and Peter Phillips.
A memorial service was held at 11 a.m. Saturday, September 20, in the First United Methodist Church in Hamburg with Revs. David Moore and John Shafer officiating. Burial was in the Snyder Cemetery. Pallbearers were Willie Claude Kelley, Gordon Hennington, Don Hartley, Bobby Davis and Jack Johnston. Honorary pallbearers were the members of the Friday Night Ladies Supper Club and the 1950 Graduating Class of Fountain Hill High School.
Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church Memorial Fund, 202 S. Main, Hamburg, AR; the Helping Hands Food Pantry, c/o Mrs. Mary Williams, 816 Pine Ridge Drive, Hamburg, AR 71646 or to a charity of choice. Funeral arrangements were by Jones-Hartshorn Funeral Home of Hamburg.
