MICHAEL, Sam S. - S.S. Michael died yesterday morning, the result of injuries received when he was struck by the southbound morning passenger train about eight o'clock as he was walking across the tracks at the Elm street crossing. He had cleared the track and was struck by the end of the heavy crossbeam of the engine pilot. He was carried at once to the office of Dr. W.J. Curry where it was found that five ribs on the left side had been crushed and that he had suffered severe internal contusion. He rested easier after reaching his home, corner of North Fifth and Maple streets, and while his condition was realized as being serious it was not thought he was in immediate danger. He was only semi-conscious. The end came very quickly about 10:30 and he passed away without the slightest pain, the result of congestion of the heart and lungs. Mr. Michael had been quite deaf for some time and evidently did not hear the approaching train or the shouts of those who saw and realized his danger. Had it not been for the fact that the train had slowed down slightly, owing to an auto crossing the track at Walnut street, he probably would have been caught fairly in the center of the track. Funeral services will be held at the residence Friday afternoon at 3:00 and will be conducted by Rev. T.E. McSpadden of the Presbyterian church. Services at the cemetery will be under the auspices of the Masonic order of which he had been a member for many years. Mr. Michael was one of the oldest and best known residents of Rogers, having lived here for nearly 35 years. He was first engaged in the restaurant and bakery business and in later years had worked in various departments of the fruit industry. In more recent years he had been connected with the canning and vinegar factories. Sam S. Michael was born February 14, 1850 near Hillsboro, Ohio but went to Iowa with his parents at an early age and grew to manhood on their farm near Des Moines. He was married December 30, 1874 to Miss Etta Olmstead of near Des Moines, who survives him. To them were born three children: Ernest Michael of Bowie, Arizona; Mrs. Erwin Funk of Rogers and Mrs. Ray Kokanour of Lawrence, Kan. With the exception of three years spent in Colorado shortly after their marriage, their life was mostly spent on the farm near Des Moines and in Rogers. No man stood higher in Rogers in business integrity and his word was ever as good as a bond. He had a knack of working with the sick and the Masonic order never made a call on him for service at the bedside of a brother and found him wanting. In the early days of Rogers when trained nurses were a rarity, Mr. Michael was especially active in this work. Mr. Michael took little interest in public or political affairs but was a great reader and was well posted on most matters of general importance. His increasing deafness in recent years kept him away from most gatherings and he was not known to many of our newer citizens. But to all of the older ones the word that "Sam Michael" has passed away marks another milestone in the history of the men who helped make Rogers.
