Olmstead Funeral Home
Heber Springs, Arkansas

J.C. May, born September 11, 1920, died Wednesday, Nov. 23, 2009, at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. He was a member of the First Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, Taylor and Eunice May, and his two brothers, Jack and Leon; and a sister, Christina.

He is survived by his wife, Mary L. May; two sons, Larry D. May and wife, Belinda, of Pine Bluff Brooks A. May and wife, Judy, of Heber Springs; and a daughter, Deborah J. Harris of Heber Springs; 4 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren; and a sister, Kathleen Galardo of San Lerando, California.

J. C. was one of “the greatest generation” who served his country in World War II. He was a gunner in Europe on the B17 Flying Fortress. After the war he returned to Heber Springs. He eventually found his way into politics. He was elected County Judge and held that position for 10 years. He then went into real estate and established May Realty. He semi-retired in 1975 and pursued many interests. Always eager to try new things, he got his pilot’s license at age 59, built his own grass strip and flew into his 80’s. He learned to scuba dive at age 70. He sailed the Pacific for 6 months on the yacht “Betty J.” He got a hundred ton boat license in his early 70’s and ran the temporary ferry when the tornado took out the bridge on Greers Ferry Lake. He was always doing things, active all the time. But he was never too busy to help someone. He was devoted to his family, a wonderful friend, and beloved by everyone who knew him. He will be missed by all.

Funeral services will be held Friday, November 27, at 11:00 a.m. in the Olmstead Chapel with Rev. Dr. J. R. DeBusk officiating. Visitation will be held prior to the funeral service. Interment will follow at Good Springs Cemetery. Levi Lovin, Quentin Foster, Joey May, Johnny May, Gary Neely, Steve May, and Carl Johnson will serve as pallbearers.
