A Pioneer Passes Over the River
On Sunday morning last, T.N. Estes, better known as "Uncle Tom" Estes, passed away at the home of his granddaughter, Mrs. Lucy Horton of Lunenburg, at the advanced age of 90 years. Mr. Estes was born in Tennessee February 9th, 1830 and in 1849 in company with several other young men of that state, went to California to hunt for gold. In passing through Arkansas, they were joined by several young men in the vicinity of Ash Flat. He returned to Arkansas in 1852 and settled in the eastern part of this county and has made his home here since that time. He had been a member of the Baptist Church 73 years, was loyal to his church and to his friends, possessing that kind of Christianity that made him love his neighbor as himself. The writer has known him intimately for more than 30 years and never heard him swear an oath. Or saw him chew tobacco, and he despised intoxicating liquors above all things. He is survived by three sons viz: W.K. Estes of Calico Rock; John J. Estes of Imboden, Lawrence County and Sam C. Estes of Hanford, California. Burial took place at the Combs Cemetery Monday afternoon, Eld. Mose Cooper conducting the funeral service.
