Robert Lee Cain, of Warren, a retired management forester with Potlatch Corporation, died October 9, 2007, at Wagnon Place in Warren. He was born August 3, 1915, in St. Pauls, North Carolina, son of the late Joseph and Mary Gibson Cain. Growing up in a large family during the Great Depression, he worked on the family's farm until he was able to begin his college studies in 1936. After receiving a BS degree in Forestry (North Carolina State University, 1940) and a MS degree in Forestry Ecology (Syracuse University in 1942), he served as a captain in the Third Infantry Regiment of the US Army during World War II, stationed in Newfoundland, stateside, France and Germany. After his discharge from service in 1946, he moved to Arkansas to work as a consulting forester in Little Rock and Mountain View before moving to Warren. There he became a management forester for the Bradley Lumber Company until 1958 and for Potlatch Corporation until 1985, retiring as the chief management forester. He then continued to work as a consulting forester for private clients until 2000. In Warren, he served as an elder and as a teacher for the Men's Baraca Class in the First Presbyterian Church for many years, as a Boy Scout Scoutmaster for four years, as the Forestry Representative on the Arkansas State Plant Board for four years, and on the Board of Directors of the YMCA for thirty years, including a long stint as Secretary. He was a member of the Society of American Foresters for sixty years and was an active member of the Rotary Club for forty years, where he was a Past President and a Paul Harris Fellow. He enjoyed his work, his family and friends and his bountiful vegetable garden, which he tended through the summer of 2006.
In addition to his parents, four siblings preceded him in death: one brother, William Cain, and three sisters, Dorothy Holmes, Jean Singletary and Lucy Riddle, all of Fayetteville, NC.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Maxine Parsons Cain; four children, Larry D. Bates of Little Rock and his wife, Sherry, Mary Ellen Cain of Silver Spring, MD and her husband, Fred Goldman, Susan Cain Hunter of Fort Smith, and her husband, Michael, and Dr. Robert C. Cain of Knoxville, TN and his wife, Dr. Pamela Cain; nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Also surviving are four sisters, Frances Huggins of Newport News, VA, Ann Larson of Lumberton, NC, Evelyn Diaz of Clemson, SC, and Louise Storms, of Lumberton, NC, and one brother, Joseph Cain, Jr of Fayetteville, NC.
Graveside services were 10:00 am Friday October 12, at Oakland Cemetery with Rev. Dari Victoria Rowen officiating. Memorial services were 10:30 am Friday October 12, First Presbyterian Church with Rev. Dari Victoria Rowen officiating. Janice Majors was organist and soloist was Mary Ellen Cain. Arrangements were by Frazer's Funeral Home.
Active pallbearers were Roger Parsons, Billy Joe Watson, Larry Goodsill, Sam Fulleraton, Bob Milton, Jim Foster, John B. Frazer, Jr., and Gerald Burton.
