CHENOWETH, Samuel A. - Friends throughout this community were shocked yesterday morning to learn of the death of Sam A. Chenoweth, formerly of Bentonville, which occurred unexpectedly at 8 o'clock at his home at Okmulgee, Okla. An hour earlier a telegram was received here calling his brother-in-law, Chas. W. Foster, and sister-in-law, Mrs. Wincie Senter, to Mr. Chenoweth's bedside but within an hour and before they could start the long motor trip came word by phone that he had passed away. Mr. Chenoweth had been in ill health several years. Mr. Chenoweth, who had been assistant postmaster here at Bentonville until exchanging places some five years ago with C.H. Smith, had from that time been assistant postmaster at Okmulgee. Besides his wife and son, David, he is survived by his father, one brother, Henry Chenoweth, one sister, Mrs. Will Wright of Joplin and other relatives including one uncle, Harry Jackson, and two aunts, Mrs. F.F. Floyd and Miss Sallie Jackson, all of Bentonville. His wife was formerly Sylvia Foster, elder daughter of Mr. and Mrs. D.S. Foster of Bentonville. Funeral services are being held this afternoon at the Foster home, conducted by the Rev. R.S. Hayden, pastor of the M.E. Church, South, with interment in the city cemetery.

Funeral services for Samuel A. Chenoweth, aged 48, well known former Bentonville resident who died at his home at Okmulgee, Okla. early Wednesday morning, Jan. 1st, 1930, were held here Thursday afternoon at the home of his father-in-law, D.S. Foster, at 223 West Thirteenth Street, conducted by the Rev. R.S. Hayden, pastor of the Bentonville Methodist Episcopal Church, South. Interment was made in the Bentonville cemetery. Although Mr. Chenoweth's death followed several years of ill health and a recent serious sickness it came as a sudden and unexpected shock to his many friends, to his relatives here and elsewhere, and even to his immediate family. It was understood here that his condition lately had been much improved. Some five years ago he had given up his place here as assistant postmaster, exchanging with the late Charles H. Smith, then assistant postmaster of Okmulgee, Okla. Mr. Chenoweth had entered the postal service here some 17 years ago under his cousin, Hugh J. Floyd, who was then the Bentonville postmaster. He served for some time as money order clerk and through his good service and application to his work was promoted to the assistant postmastership under the civil service division of the postal department. Prior to going into the postal service he had been in the grocery business here and had been employed in other lines during his boyhood and young manhood, practically all his life from boyhood having been spent in or near Bentonville. On October 1st, 1929 he was retired from the postal service on a pension and with the privilege of working whatever time he might desire. This preferment was shown him on account of his ill health and the good record made in his 17 years of service. Mr. Chenoweth was born at Neosho, Mo. April 15th, 1881. His mother having died while he was yet an infant he was reared by his grandparents, the late Mr. and Mrs. S.H. Jackson, at the old Jackson home at Caverna, Mo., a short distance north of Bentonville, and at their home here in Bentonville. Later he and his brother and sister made their homes with other relatives here in Bentonville, including S.H. Jackson, Jr. and Miss Sallie Jackson. On May 31st, 1909 he married Miss Sylvia Foster, the elder daughter of Mr. and Mrs. David S. Foster of Bentonville. His wife and their one child, David Chenoweth, aged 17, survive him. In early life he became a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South and until leaving here had always been active in that church, particularly in the young people's work. As members of a church of the same denomination at Okmulgee he and his family continued their faithful church affiliation and he continued active in the young people's work of the church and was the teacher of a large class of boys. Mr. Chenoweth was affiliated also with a number of fraternal and patriotic orders including the Odd Fellows, Knights of Pythias and A.O.U.W. Lodges. Besides his wife and son he is survived by his father, George Chenoweth, now at Helena, Ark.; one sister, Mrs. William Wright of Joplin, Mo. and one brother, Henry Chenoweth; by an uncle and two aunts, S.H. [Harry) Jackson, Mrs. F.F. Floyd and Miss Sallie Jackson, here at Bentonville, and other relatives here and at Neosho, Mo. and other Southwest Missouri points.

Funeral services were held here this afternoon for Sam A. Chenoweth, a long resident of Bentonville, who died at his home in Okmulgee, Okla. Wednesday, January 1, 1930 at the age of 49 years. Services were conducted from the home of his father-in-law, D.S. Foster, with the Rev. R.S. Hayden officiating. Burial was made in the City cemetery. Mr. Chenoweth was born in Neosho, Mo. in 1880. His mother died shortly after his birth so her three children, Henry and Sam and daughter, Josie, now Mrs. Will Wright of Joplin, were taken by Mrs. Chenoweth's brother, Harry Jackson, and Mrs. Jackson to raise. Mr. Jackson and the children came here from Neosho in 1902. Mr. Chenoweth grew to manhood here and married Miss Sylvia Foster who with one son, David, survives him. He was engaged in the grocery business a number of years but when Hugh Floyd was appointed postmaster Sam sold his business to become assistant postmaster. He served under Mr. Floyd for eight years and about two years under E.S. Miller, present postmaster, until he exchanged positions with the late Chas. H. Smith of the Okmulgee office. He has been ill for the past two years of anemia which resulted in his death.
