The SILVER STAR is POSTHUMOUSLY? awarded to PRIVATE FIRST CLASS CHARLES W LAUDERDALE, RA18331507, Infantry, United States Amy, a member of Company I, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, who distinguished himself by gallantry in action on 12 February 1951 in the vicinity of Saemal, Korea. Although wounded while his unit was fighting its way out of enemy ambush, Private Lauderdale refused to leave and requested permission to return to the fight as a rifleman. When that permission was refused because of his serious wound, he nevertheless insisted that his place in a litter jeep be given to a man who was more seriously wounded than himself. Private Lauderdale was solely responsible for seeing to his [comrade’s] evacuation and thus saving his life. When last seen, Private Lauderdale was returning to the scene of the fighting. The gallantry and selfless devotion to a wounded comrade displayed by Private Lauderdale reflect great credit upon himself and the military service. Entered the military service from Arkansas.
